November marks the beginning, for those who participate, of “Movember.” Movember is a month where men grow mustaches and donate toward men’s health issues.
This trend began in Australia in 2003 as a way to raise awareness for prostate and testicular cancers. According to the Center for Disease Control, in 2016, over 30,000 men died of prostate cancer.
Today, however, Movember is also raising awareness for male suicides. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Caucasian men accounted for about 70% of the suicide deaths in 2017, and men died by suicide about 3.5 times more often than women.
According to its website, “Movember is uniquely placed to address this crisis on a global scale. We fund groundbreaking projects all over the world, engaging men where they are to understand what works best and accelerate change.”
