Larsen re-elected as Chair of the Subcommittee on Aviation

WASHINGTON D.C., January 26, 2021 – Today Congressman Rick Larsen (WA-02 D) was re-elected as the Chair for the Subcommittee on Aviation.

Rick is the Chair, the most senior Democratic member, of the Aviation Subcommittee. The work of the Subcommittee is critical to jobs and the economy in Washington state and the Second District.

What is the Subcommittee on Aviation

The Subcommittee on Aviation has jurisdiction over all aspects of civil aviation, including safety, infrastructure, labor, and international issues. Within this scope of responsibilities, the Subcommittee has jurisdiction over the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a modal administration within the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT). This jurisdiction covers all programs within the FAA as well as aviation programs of the USDOT with respect to economic regulation of air carriers and passenger airline service. In addition, the Subcommittee has jurisdiction over commercial space transportation, the National Mediation Board, and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Issues within the jurisdiction of the Subcommittee on Aviation include:

  • Air traffic management
  • Certification of aircraft and equipment
  • UAS traffic management
  • Counter-UAS authorization, systems, and technology
  • Airport capacity and infrastructure

  • Aviation safety
  • Aviation security (issues that affect commerce and safety)
  • Commercial aviation and air carrier operations (both passenger and cargo)
  • Commercial space transportation and tourism
  • Airline consumer protection and service
  • Environmental requirements
  • Essential Air Service and other small-community air service programs
  • General aviation
  • Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and other new aircraft
  • International aviation
  • National Mediation Board
  • National Transportation Safety Board
  • War risk insurance
  • Use of navigable airspace

Other Transportation & Infrastructure Subcommittee announcements

Today, Chair of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Peter DeFazio (D-OR) announced the Committee’s Democratic roster for the 117th Congress, as well as the six subcommittee chairs and the full Committee Vice Chair, all of whom were approved by the Democrats on the Committee. In total, there will be 37 Democrats serving on the Committee, 36 of whom are named below. One spot remains open, pending selection by the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee.

The six subcommittees and their chairs are:

  • Subcommittee on Aviation: Chair Rick Larsen (WA-2)
  • Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation: Chair Salud Carbajal (CA-24)
  • Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management: Chair Dina Titus (NV-1)

Committee Democrats also selected Rep. Sharice Davids (KS-3) to serve as Vice Chair of the full Committee, a position reserved for Members who have been in Congress for fewer than five years.
