EDMONDS, Wash., April 23, 2022 – On Friday, April 22, just after 3 p.m., Edmonds officers responded to a report of pedestrians struck by a vehicle at 220th St SW and 80th Ave W in Edmonds.
Arriving officers discovered a family of four pedestrians had been southbound crossing 220th St. SW in a marked crosswalk at 80th Ave W when an eastbound vehicle failed to stop and struck two children – a 15-year-old female and a 3-year-old male. The driver, a 61-year-old Mountlake Terrace resident, immediately stopped and cooperated with the investigation. No drug or alcohol involvement is suspected at this time.
It is unknown if speed or distractions were a factor. That will be part of the overall investigation. Some video was captured and provided to the police.
The two pedestrians struck by the vehicle were transported to Harborview Medical Center for evaluation and treatment. Both sustained injuries, but the female has since been discharged, and the male is currently in critical but stable condition in the ICU. An adult female and a child in a stroller were uninjured. First responders also navigated language barriers with all involved as they attempted to render aid and investigate what had occurred.
Traffic investigators from Edmonds PD and Snohomish County Sherriff’s Office also responded. Assistance was needed from the Sheriff’s Office as another critical incident occurred in the city during the same time. The roadway was closed for approximately four hours.
While the initial available facts and circumstances did not support an immediate criminal investigation, any potential charges or traffic infractions would come from the information gained from the ongoing investigation.
Edmonds Police will release more information as the investigation develops. Anyone with information about this incident should call the Edmonds Police Department at (425) 771-0200 or email policetips@edmondswa.gov.
