Call for artists for new Casino Road area utility box art project

EVERETT—The City of Everett is introducing a new community art initiative to enhance the appearance of public works utility box cabinets through the application of art-printed vinyl. They recently launched a call for artists, seeking local artists to submit an application to be considered for these new opportunities. The first project will focus on the Casino Road area—transforming utility box cabinets into visually striking works of art that reflect the rich and diverse culture of the area.

“Community art initiatives like this exemplify our lasting commitment to supporting the arts across the city,” said Mayor Cassie Franklin of the City of Everett. “I’m proud to see art being incorporated into new areas and new opportunities for local artists to create pieces for the public to enjoy for years to come. I look forward to seeing the beautiful works of art that will grace our utility boxes.”

Local artists are invited to submit applications before March 1, 2024, via the City of Everett’s website. A review panel, consisting of citizen volunteers and City of Everett staff, will evaluate submissions based on criteria such as the quality of past work, the ability to create site-specific artwork, and a cultural connection to the Casino Road neighborhood. Selected artists will be awarded a stipend of $1,000 per design.

The chosen vinyl material for wrapping utility boxes is engineered to withstand UV exposure for over ten years. It resists graffiti, serving as a deterrent to vandalism and minimizing long-term maintenance costs.

This project is funded by the City of Everett’s cultural arts fund and a grant from L.I.S.C. Puget Sound.
