SNOHOMISH—Driver attempting to pass a pickup truck at an intersection, loses control of his vehicle and dies after crashing into a traffic pole in the city of Snohomish.
Around 12:45 a.m. Sunday, March 17, deputies and Collision Investigation Unit (CIU) detectives responded to a fatal crash at the intersection of Maple Ave and 2nd Street. When deputies arrived, they located the victim, a 31-year-old man, deceased at the scene. A second driver was not injured.
During the investigation, detectives discovered the 31-year-old victim was traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on 2nd Street. As he approached the intersection of Maple and 2nd Street, a pickup truck was turning left to go south on Maple Ave. The 31-year-old driver attempted to pass around the white pickup truck in the intersection as it was turning left. The 31-year-old collided with the front bumper of the white pickup, causing his vehicle to crash into the traffic light pole.
The 31-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other occupants in the vehicle. The 63-year-old driver of the pickup truck was not injured.
Collision Investigation Unit detectives are still investigating the crash, but believe speed was a contributing factor.
Prior to the crash, Washington State Patrol located the vehicle on US 2 and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle fled from WSP and exited on 88th Street; WSP did not pursue the vehicle.
The roadway was closed for several hours Sunday while detectives investigated the crash.
Positive identification of the decedent, as well as cause and manner of death, will be determined by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner.Â
