EVERETT—Economic Alliance Snohomish County (EASC) is hosting a virtual event on April 9, 2024, featuring a discussion with the Port of Everett on a historic ballot measure to expand the Port boundary.
The Port of Everett currently covers most of Everett, parts of Mukilteo, and areas in unincorporated Snohomish County near Marysville, totaling around 110,000 residents. In contrast, Snohomish County’s population is nearly 830,000 and growing. “Only about 15% of Snohomish County’s population currently have access to Port resources,” says Wendy Poischbeg, EASC interim CEO and President. “Expanding access to the opportunities the port brings will make a significant positive difference for businesses and residents of our county.”
In December of 2023, the Port Commission unanimously passed a resolution directing Port staff to submit a proposition to enlarge the limits of the existing Port District to the Snohomish County Council.
“Current boundaries limit the Port’s ability to invest in areas outside of its jurisdiction, restricting collaboration with neighboring communities on economic and community priorities,” says Lisa Lefeber, Port of Everett CEO. “This expansion, if passed, could help advance initiatives across the County that further support our economy and add local jobs, such as transportation improvements, community revitalization, recreational amenities, environmental initiatives and more.”
On the August 2024 primary ballot, voters will have the opportunity to decide whether to expand the Port District to include most of Snohomish County.
To inform the public about the possible boundary expansion, the Port of Everett plans to share insights and answer questions during the April 9 virtual discussion, from 8:30 to 9:30 am. EASC’s Coffee Chats event is open to the public and will be held virtually. To attend, click here to RSVP to receive a Zoom link.
