Snohomish County seeking Centennial Farm Family

SNOHOMISH COUNTY—The Snohomish County Office of Agriculture is seeking a Centennial Farm family to honor this year at the Evergreen State Fair. For the last 22 plus years, Snohomish County has honored a family that have remained in continuous agricultural production on the same land under the same family ownership for 100 years or more. To date, 41 farms have been honored by the Centennial Farm program, ranging from very small operations to several-hundred-acre farms.

“Snohomish County’s rich agricultural history is an important aspect of our culture to celebrate,” said Linda Neunzig, Snohomish County Agricultural Coordinator. “Each year we get to know a family to honor at the Evergreen State Fair. It is really special to learn more about the family’s history and recognize all they have achieved over the past 100+ years.”

“We were honored as Snohomish County’s Centennial Farm in 2013. It’s really nice the County appreciates the farming community as an important part of what Snohomish County is all about,” said Don and Barbara Bailey of Bailey Farm. “Farming is not dying out, it’s just changing. Through being honored by this program, I think others around us noticed the changes.”

“Participating in and being honored by Snohomish County’s Centennial Farm program in 2015 reminded me of the struggles my father’s family endured and it also made me realize how much it meant to my extended family,” said Ron Chew of the Chew Farm. “The most special part was the help the County gave us in gathering our family history. My wife and I, our children and our grandchildren continue to share and enjoy the pictures from the presentation.”

The program requirements include constant agricultural production under the same family on the same land for 100 years or more. To suggest a farm that meets the requirements, contact Linda Neunzig at 425-388-7170 or Linda.Neunzig@snoco.org.
