Arlington Municipal Airport and VEREGY hold ribbon-cutting for major solar array project

ARLINGTON—The Arlington Municipal Airport, and decarbonization partner Veregy, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, October 17, to commemorate the launch of its solar array project promoting the benefits of renewable energy. This is Washington’s state’s largest general aviation solar array.

The airport’s new solar installation is capable of totaling 87.5 kW of DC power, comprised of car canopies and rooftop panels on the airport office. The airport projects these installations can generate nearly 145,000 kWh of renewable energy annually, significantly offsetting its electric consumption and reducing its carbon footprint by 2,500 metric tons of CO2 over the life of the project.

“We’re very excited to bring this project to fruition with Veregy,” said Marty Wray, Director of Arlington Airport. “The savings over time will be extraordinary for the airport. This project highlights Arlington’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, ensuring we remain at the forefront of the airport energy efficiency movement.”

The airport’s partner in this project, Veregy, is an award-winning NAESCO-accredited decarbonization company focused on accelerating and simplifying the Energy Transition.

“We’re pleased to have collaborated with Veregy on this solar array project. This initiative highlights Arlington’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, ensuring our continued leadership in energy efficiency,” Arlington Mayor Don Vanney. “Veregy’s expertise was instrumental in the success of this project for our airport. Our goal is for Arlington to remain at the forefront of the airport energy efficiency movement.”

Vanney added that the solar array project will not only reduce the city’s carbon footprint but also provide cost savings for the community in the long run, all while serving as a model for other communities looking to implement renewable energy solutions.

“[W]e look forward to sharing our experiences and setting an example for sustainable energy practices,” Mayor Vanney continued.

Veregy provides turnkey engineering and construction services designed to reduces its clients’ energy and operating costs by implementing energy efficient and infrastructure upgrades, smart building technology, fleet EV infrastructure, clean energy generation, and sustainability, the company says. They project the return on the Arlington Municipal Airport solar array project to be actualized in just 11 years.

“Veregy is proud to partner with Arlington Municipal Airport on the largest solar array for a General Aviation airport in Washington. This project is a clear example of how airports can lead the way in energy efficiency,” said Corey Harper, Veregy Account Executive.

Energy savings and third-party funding helped pay for the project including a Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Aviation Grant in the amount of $250,000. The airport will also be receiving 30% or more in project cost savings from the Federal Government through the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) energy investment tax credits.
