Marysville School District HR director resigns

MARYSVILLE—Marysville School District saw another HR director step down on Thursday, the second to do so since June. Brooke Marshall stepped into the position less than three months ago on August 5 and submitted her intent to resign on Thursday, according to a notice from the district.

In June, former HR Director Alvin Cooper resigned following allegations of mismanagement. Days before Cooper’s resignation, former finance director Dr. Lisa Gonzales claimed that the HR department was “not a place where any of my staff can go to report problem behavior” and alleged “abusive behavior” from the department head in an open letter to OSPI.

Cooper was hired under former Superintendent Dr. Zac Robbins in June 2023 after the two worked together in Boston Public Schools from 2001-2006.

The school district announced on Thursday that interim Superintendent Dr. David Burgess and OSPI-appointed special administrator Arthur Jarvis will work together to find a temporary replacement.

Over the summer, the HR position was temporarily filled by Dr. Burgess. He will again attend to the day-to-day operations of the HR department in addition to fulfilling his duties as superintendent until a new HR director is found.

“The district appreciates Ms. Marshall’s efforts to help the district move forward and wishes her will in future endeavors,” the notice stated

Between Cooper, Burgess, Marshall, an incoming temporary replacement, and a full-contract hire, the district will have seen five HR directors since June 2023.

Marysville has seen high turnover rates in the last few years, including the recent departure of former Superintendent Dr. Zac Robbins, who will receive a whopping $430,000 severance package, despite the district being in a financial crisis.

The district also saw the departure of its finance director Dr. Lisa Gonzales, board director Wade Rinehardt, and board member Beth Hoiby this past summer.

  1. Your article (https://lynnwoodtimes.com/2024/10/26/hr-director/) contains a quote that includes a typo. I’ve added “[sic]” to flag it below:

    > “The district appreciates Ms. Marshall’s efforts to help the district move forward and wishes her will [sic] in future endeavors,” the notice stated.

I’m curious whether this typo was in the original notice or was added by your staff.
