LYNNWOOD—In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Lynnwood Police Department and Bellevue Police Department teamed up to present a free Women’s Self Defense Workshop on Saturday, October 26, at the Lynnwood Police Department Community Room.
“We had an amazing day at our women’s self-defense workshop,” Maren McKay, Public Information Officer for the Lynnwood Police Department, told the Lynnwood Times. “Thank you so much to Officer Craig Hanaumi from Bellevue PD for helping run the workshop with Officer McDonald.”
The event was held from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. and had approximately 30 women participated in the police department’s brand-new building/community space for the first time.
The workshop was for ages, twelve and up, and all skill levels.
Lynnwood Police Officer Maryam McDonald taught the workshop alongside co-teacher Bellevue PD Officer Hanaumi and consisted of demonstrations and different defensive tactics.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) takes place every October to raise awareness of domestic violence and its impact on victims, survivors, and communities by holding awareness events, and wearing purple. This year’s theme was “Heal, Hold and Center.”
