VOAWW urges community support amid record demand at local food banks

EVERETT—As the cost of living continues to rise, more Snohomish County neighbors are turning to Volunteers of America Western Washington’s (VOAWW) food banks for support. However, as need soars, donations are declining—placing a critical strain on resources. With VOAWW’s warehouse shelves at critically low levels, the organization is issuing an urgent call for help. If trends continue, the food bank may be forced to reduce visits from once a week to twice a month—a last-resort measure that the team is working hard to avoid.

VOAWW operates the Everett Community Food Bank, the largest food bank in Snohomish County, along with two pop-up pantries on Casino Road in Everett and the Sultan Community Food Bank. In October, the Everett Community Food Bank experienced a 56% increase in individuals served compared to the same month last year, marking it as the second highest month for visitors in the past 25 years. Visits also rose sharply from September to October, with a 25% month-over-month increase.

“As we approach the holiday season, we anticipate even greater numbers of individuals and families seeking assistance, placing additional pressure on our already strained resources,” said Jessica Moore, Vice President of Development at VOAWW. “Historically, this time of year sees a surge in visits as neighbors facing hardship look for extra support to provide meals and celebrate the season.”

Compounding the challenge is a decline in both monetary and in-kind food donations, including fewer contributions from many annual food and fund drives. Rising costs for groceries, housing, and other essentials have impacted individuals and families at all economic levels, leaving fewer resources to share.

“Every dollar, every can of food, and every hour of volunteer support makes a difference,”
Moore emphasized. “We believe in a community where no one should have to choose
between feeding their family or paying rent. But we can’t do this without our neighbors stepping in to help.”
