UFCW300 Labor Brief: Grocery Store Workers Advance Rights for Themselves and Community

I started working at Fred Meyer on Route 2 in Monroe in 2021. For a while I was Assistant Deli Manager but stepped down because of stress. In my perception, the company was not scheduling enough staff to get all the work done. I did have personal stress as well. The store added new programs, for production and although I’m efficient, I handle stress differently. Sometimes I could adapt, sometimes not. There isn’t shame in admitting limitations in anyone’s life/work.

FRED MEYER

The employer increased our tasks and reduced the number of hours to get the job done. While I still got 40 hours a week, most co-workers got less – often just a 4-hour shift each day. It was frustrating.

Now, as a deli cook, I focus on providing a full deli but often get pulled away for other tasks. Stress and more tasks with fewer co-workers wears you down. It impacts shoppers every day. Long checkout lines, unstocked shelves, a meat or deli department closed early or lacking in some area such as wait times.

If Kroger-owned Fred Meyer wanted to fully staff the stores they could do it and would make more profit. This is something I have thought on more than anyone knows.

The good news is that me and my unionized co-workers tried to address these issues in our recent contract negotiation with Fred Meyer. After six long months, while we did not get everything we deserved, we made progress. Higher wages, protections for our union health care and retirement, and some 1st ever agreement about staffing. This was a good thing.

Next time you drop by – maybe on the way out of town for the weekend or just doing your weekly shopping – please consider saying hello and thanks to a grocery store worker. Our progress to improve our jobs, not only helps us, it helps the community and shoppers too. Recognizing that person that made your day easier goes a long way in building morale as a community.
