Born Richard Bruce “Dick” Cheney on January 30, 1941, he was a prominent businessman who served as the 46th Vice President of the United States from 2001 to 2009 under President George W. Bush.

Often regarded as the “main person behind George W Bush,” Cheney wielded immense influence in the administration, shaping foreign and domestic policies with a hawkish worldview. He served as White House Chief of Staff under Gerald Ford, U.S. Representative from Wyoming, and Secretary of Defense under George H.W. Bush.

As a leading neoconservative, he advocated for assertive U.S. interventionism to promote democracy and security.

Cheney played a pivotal role in the War on Terror following the 9/11 attacks, pushing for the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, enhanced surveillance measures, and controversial policies like enhanced interrogation techniques, which drew widespread criticism for eroding civil liberties and contributing to global instability.

Cheney was a vocal critic of Donald J Trump, denouncing him as a threat to democracy, particularly after the January 6, 2021, Capitol breach; in a striking rebuke to his Republican roots, Cheney endorsed Democrat Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.
