Judge Crandall’s appointment will be officially effective on December 31, 2025, filling the vacant seat left after current Skagit County Superior Court Judge Thomas Verge’s retirement – which goes into effect at the end of the year.

“Mary Crandall’s legal expertise, commitment to public service and deep connection to Skagit County will make her an exceptional Superior Court judge,” said Gov. Ferguson during an appointment process located in Olympia’s Temple of Justice Monday.

Crandall brings more than 17 years of legal experience to her role, not only as her recent role as Superior Court Commissioner (based in Skagit County’s Mount Vernon), but as a judge pro tempore, criminal prosecutor and deputy district attorney.

In her most recent role, which she’s served for four years, Crandall presides over matters such as civil protection orders, probate, guardianship, at-risk youth and juvenile offender calendars. Crandall has also served on a number of statewide judicial committees including family and juvenile law, ethics and guardianship and probate.

“As a proud Skagitonian, it is a true honor to serve Skagit County as Superior Court Judge,” said Crandall. “I am deeply humbled and grateful to Governor Ferguson for entrusting me with this responsibility.”

Prior to joining the Skagit County Superior Court as a commissioner, Crandall served as a pro tem judge in San Juan County District Court for two years while also working as a prosecutor in Skagit County. Throughout her legal practice she has investigated, and prosecuted, a variety of criminal cases, including murder and gang-related weapons offenses, working closely with victims and witnesses.

In her roles in therapeutic courts, she worked alongside judges, treatment providers, defense attorneys and counselors to serve drug, mental health and community court participants.

Earlier in her career, Crandall spent five years in Portland at the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office where she facilitated coordination between law enforcement, county commissioners and city leaders. Prior to that, she clerked for Lane County Circuit Court Judge M.K. Merten in Eugene, Oregon.

When Crandall is now upholding the law in the courtroom she is an active member of the Sedro-Wooley Rotary Club, where she has served as a board member for two years.

She also served on the board of trustees and as board president at Hospice of the Northwest Foundation. She also enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband.

Crandall holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington and her law degree from the University of Oregon. She was born and raised in Skagit County, Washington.
