Cantwell shows her support for the Seattle Seahawks in the world’s most remote continent

SOUTH POLE—Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) showed her support for the Seattle Seahawks in Antarctica – the world’s most remote, and isolated, continent – ahead of the Seattle sports team’s Super Bowl matchup against the New England Patriots Sunday.

Cantwell was visiting Antarctica for a congressional delegation, her office said.

This morning Sen. Cantwell continued her support of the Hawks as a guest on MSNOW’s ‘Morning Joe’ where she made a wager with host Jonathan Lemire (a Patriots fan hailing from Massachusetts) that if her beloved Seattle Seahawks win the Superbowl this Sunday, she gets to interview him. If the Patriots win, on the other hand, she’ll make time for his questions whenever he decides.

“It may come as a shock to the audience but sometimes law makers don’t want to take certain questions so that is indeed a generous offer,” said Lemire.

Sen. Cantwell also placed a wager against Senator Edward Markey (D-MA) on Twitter, betting Seattle seafood and beer for New England seafood and beer – “salmon for lobster, Rainier for Sam Adams.”

February 8, 2026 will be the Seattle Seahawks fourth trip to the Super Bowl. Their most recent visit was in Super Bowl XLIX, in 2015, where they also faced off against the New England Patriots  (at the time led by seven-time Super Bowl champ Tom Brady). New England ended up winning the championship game, 28-24, with a come-from-behind victory stemming from a controversial passing play by then-Quarterback Russell Wilson, in the red zone, instead of passing it to Running Back Marshawn “Beastmode” Lynch.

The Seattle Seahawks were defending Super Bowl champions that year, following a landslide victory against the Peyton Manning-led Denver Broncos, 43-8, in 2014.

The Hawks spent the next decade rebuilding their team, trading Quarterback Russel Wilson for high draft picks – securing veteran QB Sam Darnold, as well as adding key defensive additions including Leonard Williams and DeMarcus Lawrence.

In January 10, 2024, head coach Pete Carrol ended his 14-season tenure, transitioning to an advisory role. Mike Macdonald replaced Carroll as head coach, who was previously the Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator.

The Seattle Seahawks had a strong performance through its 50th season in the National Football League (NFL), culminating with a blowout Divisional Round against NFC West rivals the San Francisco 49ers, 41-6.

Things against the Los Angeles Rams, on Sunday, January 25, were much closer, coming down, in a lot of ways, to the clock in the fourth quarter.

Seahawks took the lead in the first quarter, with a two-yard rushing touchdown by Kenneth Walker III. After back-and-forth field goals throughout first, with Seahawks keeping their lead, Kyren Williams, with the Rams, caught a nine-yard pass into the endzone for a touchdown in the second – putting the Rams ahead by three.

But it didn’t take long before the Hawks took their lead back, with back-to-back touchdowns placing the score, 24-13, in their favor going into the beginning of the second half.

The action-packed final quarter of the game was met with back-and-forth touchdowns by both teams. The Seahawks held a 31-27 lead against the Rams at the two-minute-warning, but the Rams had possession. Ultimately, the Seahawks’ defense was able to run the clock and secure their return trip to the Super Bowl.

This year’s big game will be held at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Calara, California, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
