EVERETT โ This morning, the Snohomish County Council unanimously approved Councilmember Nate Nehringโs proposal to increase transparency and public awareness when the Council considers ordinances that would raise taxes.

The newly adopted policy requires County Council staff to provide formal notification to local news outlets, post clear notice on the County Councilโs official webpage, and share information across the Councilโs social media platforms whenever an ordinance that would increase taxes is scheduled for consideration.
โThis policy helps ensure residents have clearer and more timely notice when the Council is considering tax increases,โ said Councilmember Nehring. โImproving communication with the public strengthens transparency and helps people stay informed about key decisions that may impact them.โ
Under the new policy, additional outreach will occur in advance of Council consideration of any ordinance proposing a tax increase. The goal is to ensure residents are more aware of proposals under review and have a clear opportunity to follow the discussion and provide public input.
Previously, while ordinances were publicly posted in accordance with state and local noticing requirements, there was no specific requirement for targeted outreach when legislation involved tax increases. The new policy establishes a direct and intentional communication strategy to help ensure residents remain informed about decisions that could affect their finances.
