Swedish folk singer Sofia Talvik to perform in Snohomish during last U.S. tour for years

SNOHOMISH—Berlin-based, Sweden born-and-raised, folk musician Sofia Talvik will be performing at the City of Snohomish’s Thumbnail Theater on Sunday, April 26 – just one of five-stops in Washington State overall, as part of her larger ‘Songs, Strings, and Stories’ U.S. tour.

Talvik’s music is lyrically, and story-focused, whose voice has been compared to the likes of Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez. Her most recent album, Wrapped in Paper, reached number three on the Folk Radio Charts in December 2025 and was praised by both The New York Times and NPR.

Talvik is known for her ethereal vocals and distinctive blend of Nordic folk and Americana. She has performed in 49 U.S. states and has also toured extensively throughout Europe. With ten full-length albums released, Talvik has established herself as a compelling storyteller whose music bridges continents while remaining deeply personal and intimate.

Talvik’s musical journey began as a child, learning classical piano. She received her first guitar on her 18th birthday and began writing songs to teach herself how to play. Many of these songs ended up on her first album, Blue Moon, which was released in 2005.

Both Talvik’s parents were artists growing up – her father a painter, and her mother a textile artist. Though exposed to art as an early age, Talvik was attracted to music because it was something she could just “pick up and put down” in minutes, where painting, for example, requires much more “patience” and preparation.

“I can play for five minutes or for five hours, depending on how I feel. I just like the flexibility of music. But I’ve also been attracted to lyrical-driven music. What’s great about music is you can say things and be as open as you want or conceal them in metaphors. You can do whatever you want,” said Talvik.

In the late 90’s Talvik was drawn to singer-songwriters like Suzanne Vega and Amy Mann. Prior to that she listened to a lot of 1960’s music like the Doors and Janis Joplin.

While touring throughout the U.S., Talvik was introduced to a whole new world of music, which she describes as ‘Americana’ – Blue Grass, American Folk, and other genres that never quite took off in Europe. This, paired with her travels on the road throughout the country, eventually lent inspiration to her current overall style.

“Even a couple of years ago, I feel like not a whole lot of people in Europe were familiar with the term Americana. And of course, when you say folk music in Sweden you tend to think about the Swedish traditional folk music, which is completely different from the folk music from the 60’s,” said Talvik. “Even when I play in Germany a lot of people say I play country-light, because they’re unfamiliar with what Americana is. But I think, with AI and mass-produced music, people tend to have a longing for music that feels real.”

For years, Talvik kept her day job as a graphic designer while recording, and touring for, her music on the side until she was invited to perform at South by Southwest. Realizing that her music resonated more with an American audience, than the European audience she typically played for, in 2011 she quit her job to focus on her music full-time.

That same year she embarked on a one, and a half, year-long tour through 37 U.S. States and has returned to the U.S. roughly every year since.

“I have a good fanbase in Europe too, but I think the music I write is maybe closer to the heart for people in the U.S. Though I sing in English, and many people in Sweden, as well as Germany, speak English as well, they may not pick up on the subtlety of my lyrics sometimes, not having the language be their native tongue,” said Talvik.

In Talvik’s earlier days as a musician she dreamed, like many do, of being famous. Now, she shared with the Lynnwood Times, she’s just blessed every day that she can continue to make a living doing what she loves.

Talvik shared she draws inspiration for her songs from everything she experiences, and sees, in the world. Her album Center of the Universe, for example, was deeply inspired by everything from the overturning of Roe v. Wade to the war in Ukraine.

“There was a lot of big stuff going on politically and I felt like I had something to say,” said Talvik. “Before that my themes were more traditional, like friendship and love, but with everything going on in the world today, there’s just so much to write about unfortunately.”

Though folk music has traditionally been used for social activism and political commentary (think Woodie Guthrie, Bob Dylan, and so on), Talvik believes it’s a perfect platform given it’s acoustic and lyric based.

Talvik’s Snohomish show, at the Tim Noah Thumbnail Theater, begins at 4:00 p.m. Tickets start at $25 and seating is General Admission – first come, first serve.

From a woodland concert series on the Olympic Peninsula to a historic Swedish cultural club in the heart of Seattle, Talvik’s run of shows spans some of the region’s most unique and beloved intimate venues.

Talvik, and her husband, handle all her bookings personally – specifically targeting smaller, more intimate, venues that she believes matches her style. Venues where she can see the audience, connect with the audience, and by the end of the show (hopefully) the audience feels like they know her.

Talvik’s shows are ripe with storytelling, she said, where she enjoys engaging with the audience between music to explain what her songs mean, and why she wrote them.

“My show is really a story, from beginning to end, where you’ll also hear great songs that will touch you in different ways. Some songs are happy and funny; others are sad and thoughtful. I see my program as an ocean wave that keeps rolling and you just go along with it and follow the story and music,” said Talvik.

Talvik plans to release a new single in the next few days called Can You Read My Mind, which is on her currrent touring setlist. The song is about being fed up with what’s going on with the world and wanting to escape to a cabin in the woods, or set up camp next to a tranquil river.

Can You Read My Mind will be originally released on Band Camp, and on her website. It will eventually be released on most streaming platforms such as Spotify and iTunes.

This is the last time Talvik plans to tour in the U.S., following the expiration of her work visa, for many years, planning to focus on her European shows in the near term.
