City of Lynnwood recognizes Lynnwood Times for Local News Day

LYNNWOOD—The Lynnwood Times joins 1,444 other newsrooms across the country in celebrating the essential role local news in everyday life — from helping people make informed decisions to strengthening community connection and government accountability — with the recognition of April 9th as Local News Day.

Lynnwood Mayor George Hurst issued a proclamation on April 2 recognizing the Lynnwood Times, The Everett Herald, Latino Herald, Se Habla Media, and MyEdmondsNews as trusted media partners to South County.

“It was a pleasure meeting my fellow newspaper publishers and a special recognition to Teresa Wippel for arranging today’s event,” Mario Lotmore, Publisher of the Lynnwood Times saidA special thank you to Mayor Hurst for this recognition.”

In the announcement of April 9th, as Local News Day in Lynnwood, Mayor Hurst said:

This is a Mayoral proclamation for 2026 Local News Day.

WHEREAS, the City of Lynnwood recognizes April 9th, 2026 as Local News Day whereas strong communities depend on strong local news and information to keep residents informed, connected, and prepared; and

WHEREAS, local news organizations provide verified independent reporting that helps residents make everyday decisions about schools, public safety, health care, small businesses, elections, and community events; and

WHEREAS, access to trusted local news and information strengthens civic participation supports transparency and accountability in government and fosters a culture of informed citizenship; and

WHEREAS, local journalists serve as essential members of our community attending public meetings, covering emergencies, highlighting community achievements and telling the stories that reflect who we are; and

WHEREAS, Local News Day is a national day of action connecting people with local, independent, and trusted news sources in their own communities and encouraging residents to learn about, engage with, and support the newsrooms that serve them; and

Whereas, participation in Local News Day provides an opportunity for residents, institutions, and local governments to celebrate the value of local news and information through community events, public recognitions, and visible access support;

NOW, THEREFORE, IT RESOLVED that I Mayor George Hurst do hereby proclaim April 9th, 2026 as Local News Day in Lynnwood. I encourage all residents to recognize the importance of trusted local news and information to engage with local news organizations that serve our community. Signed George Hurst Mayor.

We are a newsroom of two – Mario Lotmore and Kienan Briscoe.

Mario Lotmore is the Founder and Publisher of the Lynnwood Times is an industrial engineer and project manager by trade and now an investigative journalist. Analyzing bills and government policy has further enhanced his ability to effectivelyfacilitate, coordinate, communicate, and navigate bureaucratic red tape to find deliver award-winning journalism the public and other news outlets trusts. He is also well versed in reading and interpreting legaldocuments.

Professionally, Lotmore has interviewed and/or wrote about many high-level elected federal state, county and local officials such as President Donald J Trump, President Joe Biden, Rep. Rick Larsen, Gov. Jay Inslee, Gov. Bob Ferguson, Secretary of State Steve Hobbs, Attorney General Nick Brown, House Speaker Laurie Jenkins, Senate Majority Leader Jamie Pedersen, and scores of State Representatives and Senators, Snohomish County Council members, mayors, city council members and school directors; many of whom can attest to his accuracy, fairness and professionalism.

He has received Washington State Capitol Correspondents Association (WSCCA) press credentials and is an award-winning member of the Washington Newspaper Publisher’s Association.

Michael Kienan Briscoe (who’s preferred name is Kienan) is an award-winning Journalist and novelist based out of the Greater Seattle area. His work reporting on some of the region’s most groundbreaking stories has garnered over a dozen awards including being named 2023 Feature Writer of the Year by the Washington Newspaper Publisher’s Association (WNPA) and led to many connections with celebrities and public officials (State Governors, Senators, County Executives, members of Congress, and cabinet members to the Office of the President of the United States).

Prior to joining the Lynnwood Times staff as Senior Reporter, Briscoe has worked as a freelancer in the area for a number of years contributing to media outlets including: The Pulitzer Prize-nominated Puget Sound Business Journal, Seattle Weekly, News Break, Kirkland Reporter, Bellevue Reporter, Mercer Island Reporter, Redmond Reporter, Bothell/Kenmore Reporter, Enumclaw Courier-Herald, Issaquah-Sammamish Reporter, Snoqualmie Valley Record, the University of Washington’s campus newsroom and Game Rant, while also running the Green River Current’s Arts and Entertainment department as Editor. He is also the author of four books. 

Briscoe graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in English and Journalism. Outside of writing he enjoys creating art, reading poetry and classic literature, playing music, snowboarding, camping, hiking, and traveling the world. 

He has received Washington State Capitol Correspondents Association (WSCCA) press credentials and is an award-winning member of the Washington Newspaper Publisher’s Association.

Engagement and Reach

Our 2025 online presence was 114 million across all of our social platforms and website. The Lynnwood Times brand grew 204% from 2024 (37.5 million) to the end of 2025. The Lynnwood Times is projecting 176 million views (165 million to 200 million range) on all social platforms and website for 2026.

The Lynnwood Times also distributes a bi-weekly  in-print newspaper to 60 location in South Snohomish County and mails to approximately 5,000 households.
