Veterans Memorial coming to Haller Bridge

SNOHOMISH COUNTY, Wash., May 28, 2021 – Today, in honor of Memorial Day 2021, Snohomish County Executive Dave Somers and Snohomish County Councilmember Nate Nehring (District 1) announced the creation of a Veterans Memorial at Haller Bridge on the Centennial Trail. The memorial will honor Snohomish County residents who died in post-9/11 conflicts.

This memorial will be the first in Snohomish County to specifically honor military veterans killed in post-9/11 conflicts. The memorial will be located at the approach to the Haller Bridge where it crosses the Stillaguamish River. This location along the Centennial Trail is a popular destination for recreation and will provide a peaceful setting for reflection and prayer to honor the brave men and women lost to recent military conflicts.

“We must always remember those who paid the ultimate price for us,” said Snohomish County Executive Dave Somers. “This memorial will give our residents an opportunity to pay tribute to those we’ve lost and re-commit themselves to serving their communities.”

“I am proud to see this project moving forward to honor the bravest among us,” said Councilmember Nate Nehring, who represents the location of the new memorial. “Snohomish County has a long history of supporting our veterans and honoring those lost to conflict. This is a unique addition to that proud tradition.”

“The sacrifice of service members who have given their lives to our Country post-9/11 is still fresh in the memory of many local families,” said Councilwoman Megan Dunn. “I’m glad that the County will be able to provide this memorial for those who seek a quiet and reflective space to remember their loved one who paid the ultimate price for our Country.”

“Having this cherished place of remembrance and reflection here in Snohomish County is a fitting memorial for our men and women in uniform who gave their lives for our freedom,” said Councilman Sam Low. “May we never forget their courage and great sacrifice for our Country.”

The Snohomish County Arts Commission selected Caroline Sumpter to create the Veterans Memorial at Haller Bridge. Caroline has completed several art projects in the region. She will work with county staff to coordinate with veterans, military families, and the broader community to create a meaningful art installation to honor our local heroes.

The artwork will be revealed and dedicated in a Memorial Day ceremony in 2022.
