Op-Ed: Juneteenth America’s newest national holiday

MUKILTEO, Wash., June 18, 2021 – Mayoral candidate Joe Marine praises the bipartisan effort securing Juneteenth as a national holiday.

Yesterday afternoon the bipartisan bill declaring the 19th day of June, a federal holiday was signed by the President.

“I am overjoyed that the House and Senate finally stepped up to honor Juneteenth as an official federal holiday. It is a unifying act for Americans of every color to commemorate the emancipation of African Americans and the end to a stain on our nation.”

After President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862, that went into effect on January 1, 1863, it took more than two-and-a-half years for slavery throughout the South to be abolished.

When the Civil War ended, Union Army Major General Gordon Granger was given command of the District of Texas. The surrender of General Robert E. Lee in April of 1865 coupled with the arrival of Granger and his regiment on June 19th later that year, finally provided the resources necessary to enforce Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.

We as Mukilteans cherish dignity and respect for our fellow neighbors. Join me in celebrating Juneteenth as America’s newest national holiday!
