According to its website, “The Prosecuting Attorney’s Office is responsible for prosecuting all adult and juvenile felony cases referred by county law enforcement agencies, and all misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor cases referred by the county sheriff, the State Patrol, all state agencies, and some cities who have contracted with the county for misdemeanor prosecution services.”

After 20 years with the prosecutor’s office, current top County Prosecutor, Adam Cornell announced last year that he will not seek re-election.

Interview with candidate Jason Cummings

LT Exclusive: Jason Cummings

With approximately 25 years of experience at the Snohomish County Prosecutor’s Office, Jason Cummings has served as Chief Civil Deputy for the last 14 years. In addition to running the Civil Division, and its team of 35 attorneys and staff, he manages the Office’s $30 million budget and has served on the leadership teams of the last three elected prosecuting attorneys.

In 2009, Cummings was appointed acting Prosecuting Attorney by the Snohomish County Council to manage operations until Prosecutor Mark Roe was formally appointed later that year.

Cummings serves as lead on the Data Collection Initiative that begun earlier this year to evaluate performance metrics with the goal of better understanding racial and ethnic disparities in Snohomish County.

Raised in Edmonds, Cummings graduated from Edmonds High School and the University of Washington before earning his Law Degree at the Seattle University School of Law 1996. He serves or has served on the Imagine Children’s Board, the Edmonds Lion Club, as a youth sports coach, and as a School board and committee member.

Jason lives in Edmonds with his wife of 25 years, Kim, along with their son and daughter.

Interview with candidate Brett Rogers

LT Exclusive: Brett Rogers

Brett Rogers grew up in Wisconsin and began his professional career as a correctional officer before transitioning to law enforcement. In 1996 he moved to Washington state to continue his law enforcement career with the City of Seattle Police Department.

While working full-time for SPD, Rogers completed law school and became a member of the Washington Bar in 2008. He maintained a small solo law practice serving mostly pro-bono and “low-bono” clients while continuing his law enforcement career.

Rogers has hands-on experience in and knowledge of police tactics, criminal investigations, law enforcement policy and accountability which he states uniquely qualifies him to serve as the next Snohomish County Prosecutor.

As Prosecutor, Rogers will primarily focus on public safety and order. He wants his family –and everyone’s— to live in safe and stable communities.

A Snohomish County resident since 2005, Rogers lives in Lake Stevens with his wife, Jeanine, and their three Labrador Retrievers. He enjoys hiking, local wineries, and spending time with his adult children and grandchildren.
