Woman who struck two children with car in Edmonds to be charged

EDMONDS, Wash., April 28, 2022 – The Edmonds Police announced today that the two children struck by a vehicle last Friday were released from the hospital over the weekend and are recovering at home. The toddler is recovering from a concussion and internal bruising and the teenager suffered significant bumps and bruises.

The driver of the vehicle, a 61-year-old Mountlake Terrace woman, will be cited in Edmonds Municipal Court for Negligent Driving 2nd degree. Negligent Driving 2nd degree is an infraction that carries a potential $553 fine. Police state, “INATTENTION” to be primary cause of the accident.

An investigator from the Edmonds Traffic Unit reviewed video surveillance of the incident and conducted additional interviews and analysis of the available evidence.

It was determined that the female driver had picked up a family member from an area school before the collision. Four family members were lawfully crossing 220th Street SW at 80th Avenue W in a marked crosswalk when the fourteen-year-old female and two-year-old male were struck (initially reported as fifteen and three). The information gained during the investigation showed that the driver may have been distracted by the need to provide additional care and monitoring of the family member in her vehicle.

A review and analysis of the video showed the vehicle was traveling at or below the posted speed limit of 30mph when the collision occurred. There was no evidence that the driver was affected by drugs or alcohol.

While the vehicle had initially been impounded for evidence, it is being returned to the owner. Members of the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office Collision Investigation Unit also assisted with processing the collision scene.
