Get to know your new 2019-20 Edmonds school district principals

This upcoming school year, Edmonds School District will have ten new principals across its schools. As a way for parents and the rest of the community to get to know them, the Lynnwood Times reached and asked each of the new principals three questions:

  1. What is your background?
  2. What is your message to local families in the community?
  3. What interests do you have outside of school?

Stacy Crum, College Place Elementary

  1. I have been an assistant principal in Seattle Public Schools for the past six years. I am a graduate of Stanford University where I received my BS in engineering, and MS in sociology, and I studied educational leadership at the University of Washington. Additionally, 2. I have taught 1st, 5th and 6th grades in California. I moved to Washington in 2010.
  2. My message to families is that I believe it is important for students to feel known, cared for and held to high expectations. School is a place all should feel valued and welcome. I believe the school is the heart of the community.
  3. My family is my biggest interest outside of school. I have two daughters, a 16-year-old who goes to Shorecrest High School and a 19-year-old who attends the University of Washington. and 19. I am also a life-long swimmer, and in my youth, I was a member of the US National Swim Team. I still swim several times a week.

Jacklyn Henly, Lynnwood Elementary

  1. I have worked in the Kent and Hood Canal School Districts over the last eight years as an elementary music specialist. I just recently finished two years as a Dean of Students and completed my Masters in Educational Leadership and Principal Certification from the University of Washington, Tacoma.
  2. I’m extremely honored and humbled to be serving the Lynnwood community. Our children are our most important gift, and I’m thrilled and excited to help create a positive learning environment where all students can thrive and reach their greatest potential.
  3. Outside of school, I look forward to travelling and spending time with family and friends. I also love to curl up with a good book and snuggle with my cat, EJ.

Norma Lee, Hazelwood Elementary

  1. I came to Edmonds School District as Hazelwood’s Assistant Principal in 2018 after 28 years in Shoreline School District. During my time in Shoreline, I taught grades K-4 and was an Instructional Coach for two years.
  2. Partnership with families is key to success for all of our students. At Hazelwood we value building an inclusive, relational learning community so that students feel safe and learning is maximized. This supportive learning environment allows all of our students to grow academically, socially, and emotionally so that they can become responsible, contributing citizens in our rapidly changing world. We are in this together and I’m grateful to serve Hazelwood as principal.
  3. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends when I’m not at school. I also enjoy reading, travel, plays, and going for walks.

Scott Morrison, Brier Terrace Middle

  1. I grew up in the Alderwood Manor/Lynnwood area, attended Edmonds School District schools since 1st grade and graduated from Lynnwood High School. I earned my BA in Social Studies and earned my teaching certification at WSU, and earned a Bachelors in English from the UW and an MEd from UW. I live in Seattle with my wife and 2 boys.
    Most of my career of over 20 years has been spent in High Schools as a Social Studies Teacher and Assistant Principal. I have spent the last 6 years as Principal at College Place Elementary, which has been extremely rewarding and an amazing learning experience. I am excited to start working at Brier Terrace. I feel my experience has prepared me well to serve the BTM community and I am eager to start learning with everyone.
  2. My message to our community is that I am, and our district is committed to ensuring ALL of our students are learning and thinking at high levels. A big part of this is knowing who our students are and what motivates them, knowing where they are in their learning relative to standards, and finding ways to help students learn to the standards. This is not always easy, however our students are worth working hard for, and we do work very hard to accomplish this.
  3. I enjoy spending time with my family. I crew on a racing sailboat, which is great fun. I like to travel with my family. I love to play soccer. I really love my work and I enjoy seeing people learn and change based on their learning.

Jessica Asp, Oak Heights Elementary

  1. I have been an educator in the Edmonds School District for the last ten years. I have taught kindergarten up to 6th grade as well as served as an instructional coach and the assistant principal at Oak Heights last year. I am a graduate of the University of Washington. Go Huskies!
  2. My message to families is that I am beyond grateful to be serving our community. I am looking forward to partnering together to ensure that our students are being supported and encouraged in their dreams and aspirations. I am committed to the success and wellbeing of all our students.
  3. Outside of school, I am a lover of the outdoors! I enjoy all that our area has to offer from biking, hiking, and finding local restaurants to have a bite to eat while enjoying a fabulous view.

Andrea Collins, College Place Middle

  1. My background is in teaching and learning – serving the needs of all students that are enrolled at my school. This is my 15th year in public education, and I am proud to be the Principal at College Place Middle School. I bring my passion for teaching and learning to all phases of my work. I enjoy learning every day, and I hope to continue to learn from the bright minds of the students that attend CPM. I enjoying seeking to understand and then to be understood in the work that I do with students, families, staff and the community.
  2. My message for the community is: we are better together – involvement, and collaboration is transformational when multiple voices are heard and responded to in a respectful and responsive manner.
  3. Outside of school I enjoy organic gardening, hiking with my family and enjoying the beautiful Pacific Northwest!

Mary Williams, Mountlake Terrace Elementary

  1. I am starting my 15th year in education. I taught primarily 1st grade, 3rd grade and 4th grade. I had brief stints teaching other grades as well and was a reading specialist for one year. This is my 5th year as an administrator in Edmonds. I am transferring from Cedar Way Elementary School.
  2. I am excited to be back at Mountlake Terrace Elementary, I was an assistant principal here 4 years ago. When this school came open for transfer I just had to put my name in. It is a school where students are believed in as they are and where staff regularly go above and beyond to meet the needs of the learners. Parents are valued and their ideas and voices are wanted and needed at the table to be a vital part of the conversation around student success. I look forward to continuing to grow the strong foundation that is already here and work alongside this community as it grows and changes.
  3. I am a huge sports fan! My husband and I watch a wide range of sports from football and basketball, to golf and tennis. I am currently pregnant, but I look forward to running again after my son’s birth. I am a huge music lover! I try to go to local concerts; attend the opera and musicals; and I also sing in a local choir. I also LOVE shoes!

Mary Fordham, Meadowdale Elementary

  1. I completed my Bachelor’s from The Pennsylvania State University and my Master’s from University of Washington. I began my teaching profession as a special education teacher and worked in Texas, Oregon, and Washington in both elementary and middle school levels. For the past two years, I worked as an assistant principal in Edmonds School District. I am currently working on my Ph.D in education and also teach a Severe Disabilities graduate course at Seattle Pacific University.
  2. I am excited to be your Interim Principal for the 2019-20 school year. I look forward to meeting and working with each of you to make this a smooth, fun, and successful year for staff, families, and, students at Meadowdale Elementary!
  3. I enjoy traveling, gardening, hiking, and learning to be fluent in Spanish. However, my favorite activity is riding and racing mountain bikes alongside my Spokeswomen Racing teammates and my Vizsla pup, Livy.

I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the Cedar Way Elementary community! It is a growing, diversifying area of Mountlake Terrace and it is my honor to help the school community adjust to these wonderful changes. I have spent the last 13 years as principal at Lynnwood Elementary in the Edmonds School District. Prior to that, I was a principal and teacher in Olympia, WA, Shiga, Japan, and Houston, TX.
