Over 200 firearms relinquished in Guns for Gift Cards event

EVERETT, Wash., December 17, 2022—On Saturday, December 17, the Everett Police Department held its first Guns for Gift Cards drive-thru event at the South Precinct giving residents the opportunity to relinquish unwanted firearms. Everett Police exchanged an incredible 241 firearms for VISA gift cards valued up to $300 (totaled $25,000).

The goal of the event was to reduce the possibility of an unwanted firearm being used in a tragic accident, suicide, or possibly stolen and used in a violent crime. Just last week, there were at least six known incidents involving the discharge of a firearm of with one person was killed. The results of the Guns for Gift Cards event are as follows:

  • Handguns-123
  • Long guns-109
  • ARs / AKs-9

Everett Police will destroy firearms that are not stolen or used in any crimes, according to a report by MyEverettNews.

” If the weapon is stolen or determined to have been used in the commission of a crime, the firearm will be impounded as evidence and not destroyed unless and until its evidentiary value has dissipated,” EPD said to MyEverettNews. “Participants who submit a firearm that is determined to be stolen or related to
criminal activity may be properly investigated for their role in any criminal activity related to the firearm.”
