Primary Election 2023: Winners, losers, and too close to call

SNOHOMISH COUNTY, Wash., August 1, 2023—Over one hundred thousand Snohomish County residents cast their ballot to vote in the 2023 Primary Election for county and local elections. As of August 1, 19.39% of ballots have been returned – that’s 101,110 residents!

A Primary Election is required if more than two candidates file for the same position or if the race is a partisan office which will be held on August 1, 2023. The Top 2 candidates will then advance to the 2023 General Election scheduled for November 7. As of August 1, the City of Edmonds, leads the county with most ballots retuned with 29.84%, followed by Fire District 24 with 25.70%, and then the City of Brier with 25.51%.

Below are key races to watch in Snohomish County for the 2023 Primary Election. Initial results as of 8:15 p.m., Tuesday, August 1, have several candidates leading their race.  Primary Election results will be certified on August 15, 2023. The Lynnwood Times will be updating the election results daily by 6 p.m.

Local Propositions

City of Mukilteo Proposition No. 1

Single -Year, Temporary Emergency Medical Services Levy Lid Lift: This proposition pertains to a single year, temporary increase to the City’s EMS property tax levy. It would increase the EMS levy to a rate not to exceed $0.40 per $1,000 of assessed valuation in 2024. The 2024 levy would be used for subsequent levy limits. This levy lift would expire after six years. The levy then reverts as if this never existed, and the levy increased over that time by the maximum amount.

Marysville Fire District RFA Proposition No. 1

Emergency Medical Services Property Tax Levy: Will the Marysville Fire District, a Regional Fire Authority, be authorized to impose a regular property tax levy of $0.50 or less per $1,000.00 of assessed valuation for each of ten consecutive years, with collection beginning in 2024, to provide funding for emergency medical services, with such levy being imposed instead of the existing emergency medical services levies of the City of Marysville and Fire District No 12 during this time?

North County Regional Fire Authority Proposition No. 1

Restoring Property Tax Levy for Emergency Medical Services: The Governing Board of North County Fire/EMS adopted Resolution No. 04122023-01concerning a regular property tax levy for Emergency Medical Services. This proposition would authorize North County Fire/EMS to restore its regular property tax levy of Fifty Cents ($0.50) per One Thousand Dollars ($1,000.00) of assessed valuation for 2023 (the same level as existed in 2015) and thereafter pursuant to RCW 84.55.050. The dollar amount of this levy would be used for the purpose of computing the limitations for subsequent levies under RCW 84.55.050.

  1. I don’t think that one was on the Primary. Will have to wait for the General in November for that race.
