Edmonds School District announces superintendent finalists

Hear from top two candidates at community forum Monday, March 2

LYNNWOOD –  After two days interviewing seven candidates to become the next superintendent, the Edmonds School District Board of Directors has narrowed the search to two finalists. Students, families, staff and community members are all encouraged to hear from the top candidates on the evening of Monday, March 2. 

The board originally planned to advance three finalists, but said after intently reviewing the candidates they unanimously agreed on two: (in alphabetical order) Dr. Gustavo Balderas, currently with Eugene School District 4J in Eugene, Oregon; and Dr. Deborah Rumbaugh, currently with Highline School District in Burien, Washington. 

“We are very excited to move forward with our top candidates and are confident one of them will be the right fit for our district’s needs,” said School Board President Dr. Deborah Kilgore. “We’ve been inspired by what these two professionals can bring to the table and look forward to introducing them to our community next week.”

Below you will find more information about the two finalists (in alphabetical order): 

Dr. Gustavo Balderas
Dr. Gustavo Balderas

Dr. Gustavo Balderas currently serves as the superintendent of Eugene School District 4J in Eugene, Oregon. Dr. Balderas previously served as superintendent at two different districts in California. Prior to that, he was an assistant superintendent in Oregon. He also was a classroom teacher and counselor. 

Dr. Balderas holds a Bachelors of Arts in Education from Western Oregon State College, and a Masters in Curriculum and Assessment from Portland State University. He holds a Doctoral degree from the University of Oregon. 

Dr. Deborah Rumbaugh
Dr. Deborah Rumbaugh

Dr. Deborah Rumbaugh currently serves as Instructional Leadership Executive Director at Highline Public Schools in Burien, Washington. Dr. Rumbaugh previously served as the Executive Director of Human Resources-Employee Services. Prior to that, she worked as a science teacher, assistant principal and principal.

Dr. Rambuagh holds a Bachelors of Arts in Education from Pacific Lutheran University, and a Masters in Educational Leadership. In addition, she holds a Doctoral degree from Seattle Pacific University where she obtained her Doctoral degree in Executive Leadership.

The Community forum is at Meadowdale High School (6002 168th St. S.W., Lynnwood) between the hours of 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
