ARLINGTON—A fatal pedestrian-vehicle collision just south of exit 206 into Smokey Point leaves one dead and shutdowns all three lanes of I-5 northbound at Smokey Point for three hours, Washington State Patrol reports.
Shortly after 5 a.m., Friday, April 5, Melisa Delgado Chavez, 29, of Arlington was struck by a vehicle while walking on I-5 near the onramp to SR 531. She was pronounced dead at the scene and the next of ken has been notified, Washington State Patrol reports.
The driver of the vehicle that struck Chavez reported the collision and waited for police. Both occupants of the vehicle, a male and female, are 47 and from Portland, Oregon.

The collision resulted in at least a two mile back up, according to WSDOT, on I-5 northbound leaving early morning commuters taking US 2 to SR9 to get to Mount Vernon.
At this time, it is unknown if the driver of the vehicle will face any changes. It is also unknown what led up to the fatal collision.
