Take the survey: What should be the new name for Mukilteo Speedway

MUKILTEO—The City of Mukilteo is inviting residents to participate in a public survey on renaming the Mukilteo Speedway (SR 525) from Beverly Park Road to 1st Street in Mukilteo. The survey will run until May 31st, providing an opportunity for the community to voice their opinions on potential new names for the main stretch of road in Mukilteo.

Despite numerous external analyses conducted over the years, the origin of the name “Mukilteo Speedway” remains unclear. Various sources have attributed the name to different reasons.

The process for naming a state highway is administered by the Washington State Transportation Commission. If a name change is approved, properties currently addressed with “Mukilteo Speedway” would need to update their information to reflect the new address after the City readdresses those properties.

“We are excited to engage the community in this exciting opportunity,” stated Mayor Joe Marine. “The name Mukilteo Speedway never quite made much sense to me, so I am glad we are looking at alternatives that better reflect the character of Mukilteo.”

Residents are encouraged to complete the brief, three question survey at https://tinyurl.com/ycxwkwvz.

  1. I don’t understand why the Speedway name alternatives consist of three words. That’s the equivalent of a vanity license plate rather than a useful name change. Why not offer the public “Mukilteo Parkway,” “Salish Parkway” or similar two-name labels instead of the cumbersome three-wore proposed labels?

    1. This is exactly how I feel. Salish Sea Highway, Salish Speedway or something easy to say. Actually I’d rather it not change it all, but if you have to change it make it something not so cumbersome.

  2. Stop wasting taxpayer money.. Leave the name as is.. Spend the money on more important things.. Perhaps fix a few potholes.. Flashing crossing lights for pedestrians? Especially for school zones. Repainting faded road edges hard to see int he rain.. This is a frivolous waste of time and money Nobody thinks the road is a raceway.. and with the many lights on the speedway, thats enough to slow things down.. SO what is the approximate cost for this proposed change? And what will. it accomplish? Seriously, use common sense.. There are so many things to think about.. this is just plain silly.

      1. I agree Marie!
Why don’t they tell you the cost of replacing every street sign along Mukilteo Blvd would cost, not yo mention the $$ wasted as they get paid by tax payers money to set around discussing such an issue when there are SOOOO MANY other MORE IMPORTANT things to be spending $$ on, like changing the name of an already very established name, that has nothing wrong with it as it is now!
This is the stuff, that DOES NOT NEED CHANGE!
I’m in absolute disbeliefs that we are even going there at a time like this!
Nobody benefits from this, but many would benefit for helpful changes, such as make it more accessible for the Handicap and people with Disabilities and for the Elderly?
Common, Wake up and get in the program!

  3. There are bigger fish to fry in the area.
The speedway has been that as long as I can remember. Taking the bus to Olympic view junior high in the early eighties it was just one lane each way. The name fits more now than then. Remember when they renamed SeaTac airport. That lasted. We could rename Mukilteo. How about south Everett.

  4. stop wasting money! leave it alone MUKILTEO SPEEDWAY will always be the name just like EVERET MALL WAY. all the businesses along there can not afford to even run a business as it is. NOW YOU WANT THEM TO PAY TO HAVE ALL THERE LETTERHEADS, RETURN ADDRESS, BUSINESS CARDS, BROCHURES, MENUS, EVERYTHING WILL NEED TO BE CHANGED. ……..LET…IT….BE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Mukilteo Speedway is running parallel with the Paine Field Airport runway. What a perfect match! Don’t change something that makes sense. KEEP the name please!!!

  6. “Never quite made much sense to me?” That’s not a good enough reason for change, mayor. Do better.

  7. The thinking that people “speed” because the road name is “speedway” is as Stupid as people who think we need to put “deer crossing” signs somewhere safer for the deer to cross.

  8. OMG, is this “all” the city has on their mind? Crime, the homeless and taxes are out of control and getting worse and the discussion of renaming the speedway “is a good way of getting residential feedback”.

What about the burden of over building Mukilteo and the drain on natural resources just to increase the tax base and coiffures?

The Mukilteo speedway was named for the actual racetrack that was located at or about where lower Harbor Point meets the speedway near Walgreens, the last effort was a bicycle racetrack in the late eighties.

No I don’t agree on changing the name!

  9. Why change it? Is the city thinking that because it’s named a Speedway, people will do so? Well….People are going to speed until they are caught either by cameras or the police and ticketed period! Not a new name lol
Save the taxpayers and businesses on it their money. Think about what to do to combat the crime, gangs, car theft , to name a few, in our area. That should keep y’all busy… I would think!

  10. Mukilteo Speedway
    Is unique…leave it alone.
Plus, the options are too long for easy conversation.

  11. What a waste of time. What a waste of money. Surely we have more important issues to attend to in Mukilteo.

  12. I agree, with many other responses, WHY? It would be a massive waste of money, think of all the street signs, the web maps, the car navigators, the confusion of people looking for an address, all the businesses that would have to change the directions on the website, the business cards, the coupons, WHY? Just because someone thinks it is more politically correct to change the name, Mukilteo is already a salish name.

  13. I agree there is no good reason to change the name. What a waste of time, effort and money. Who thought up this idea, anyway?

  14. I like the current name Mukilteo Speedway, It’s an original name and a unique name. Also a name that best describes what it is now.

  15. Leave the name as is. It’s the name of that highway. Period. Everyone knows that name and now relies on it. Don’t you have anything better to do like fighting crime, homelessness, drugs, etc than wasting taxpayer’s time and money on changing the name of a highway. Maybe we should change the the politicians at the same time we change the name of a highway. Go back and do some real work.

  16. Good grief, bureaucrats… leave the name of the Mukilteo Speedway alone. It’s a perfectly fine name. Go deal with more important issues please!!!!!

  17. I like the name Mukilteo Speedway. Let’s keep it as it is. Consideration should be given to all the businesses that would be effected by such a change and the expense it would cost citizens of Mukilteo. I agree with others that our tax paying dollars could be put to better use.

  18. This is ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous.
What’s next, are we changing the name of the town? This is utter nonsense, all over a name change. Leave Mukilteo Speedway how it is. Do NOT change the name. There is no reason for this, if people are speeding on the “speed” way, they will both get a ticket and get very hurt. People are going to speed, no matter what, so LEAVE THE NAME AS IT IS!! A name change will not stop people being reckless.
Focus that taxpayer money on more important things. How about you pay attention to bigger problems, like drugs or homelessness? This is a huge waste.
We love our Mukilteo Speedway, we love its name. Please keep it the way it is.
