MUKILTEO—Jason Moon, a Democrat, announces his candidacy for the position of State Representative for the 21st District against incumbent Strom Peterson (D-Edmonds). Below is his press release in its entirety.
I am excited to announce my candidacy for the position of State Representative for the 21st District (D). Like many of you, I have noticed our Representatives seem to not accurately reflect the needs and interests of the people in our district. The high-density development and housing regulations being promoted by current leaders do not serve our community well. The decline in public safety due to legislative decisions that have impacted both our businesses and personal security. We need to collaborate with our law enforcement agencies and stand in solidarity with them to ensure the safety of our community.
Our district is unique, and we must assert that we are not Seattle – our needs, challenges, and aspirations are distinct. The policies currently being passed by our leaders in Olympia do not adequately represent our district’s unique character and needs. We are blessed with beautiful cities and stunning waterfronts. However, the current policy of designating both Mukilteo and Edmonds as high transit areas and imposing density on our waterfronts does not align with the desires of the majority of our district’s residents. The question arises – why do they want to see our picturesque waterfronts, as well as our charming cities, crowded with high-density developments, 15-minute neighborhoods and take away local control? Why should our cities suffer by being designated as high transit when the majority of transit users reside outside of our cities? These are the concerns that I aim to address as
your next Representative.
Over the past five years, we have all observed a decline in public safety due to legislative decisions that have impacted both our businesses and personal security especially along highway 99 corridor. I will work collaboratively with our law enforcement agencies and stand in solidarity with them to ensure the safety of our community.
I am a firm believer in the power of diversity and the importance of local representation. The departure of Senator Shin (21st LD Senator 1999-2014) from leadership has created a void in the AANHPI community that I can help fill.
Our 21st Legislative District, is a rich tapestry of diverse cultures and perspectives, and our leadership should reflect this diversity.
