MARYSVILLE—Detectives with the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team (SMART) are investigating a use of force incident that occurred on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, near the Costco at the Twin Lakes Shopping Center located at 16616 Twin Lakes Avenue in Marysville.
At approximately 8:00 p.m., a Marysville police officer initiated a traffic stop on the south side of the shopping center. During the stop, an altercation took place, and the officer was dragged by the suspect’s vehicle. The suspect then drove a short distance before crashing into the Costco building, and the vehicle became engulfed in flames.
The dragged officer sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. The suspect died at the scene after a Marysville police officer fired shots during the altercation.
The identity of the suspect has not been confirmed. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s office will determine the exact cause and manner of death.
Businesses in the area underwent a lock-down as a precautionary measure. There is currently no threat to public safety.

SMART is a team of civilian community members, investigators, evidence technicians, records specialist, and public information officers from various Snohomish County law enforcement agencies and Washington State Patrol, who respond to, and investigate, police use of force incidents. When the SMART investigation is complete, results will be forwarded to the Snohomish County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
