Marysville celebrates opening of second turf field and new public art at Strawberry Fields Athletic Complex

MARYSVILLE — The City of Marysville celebrated the grand opening of a new synthetic turf soccer field at Strawberry Fields Athletic Complex on June 10, expanding year-round recreation opportunities at the city’s most heavily used athletic facility.

Community members, local leaders and project partners gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the complex, located at 6100 152nd St. NE. The project converted Field 3 from natural grass to a synthetic turf surface designed to withstand heavy use, winter rain and evening play. Improvements also include ADA-accessible bleacher seating for up to 150 spectators, drainage upgrades, new walkways, security fencing, soccer goals, ball netting and a replacement flagpole.

“As Marysville continues to grow, so does the need for high-quality recreation facilities,” Mayor Jon Nehring said. “This new turf field provides a durable space for year-round play while creating more opportunities for youth sports, tournaments and community gatherings. We’re grateful to our funding partners for helping make this investment possible.”

The $1.86 million project was funded through a combination of city and partner contributions, including $100,000 from Snohomish County and $50,000 each from Pilchuck Soccer Alliance and Amazon.

“We’re so glad to see this project come together, and we’re grateful to partner with the City of Marysville, Snohomish County, and Pilchuck Soccer Alliance to make it happen,” said Guy Palumbo, public policy director at Amazon. “We continue to invest in Strawberry Fields because it’s a place where families and young athletes can play and connect year-round, and investing in youth is exactly the kind of community impact we wantto be part of.”

The new field is the second synthetic turf field at Strawberry Fields Athletic Complex and follows strong demand and growing use of the first turf field, which opened in 2023.

“The opening of this next phase demonstrates our community’s ongoing commitment to health and wellness,” said Marysville Parks, Culture and Recreation Advisory Board President Jodi Condyles. “We are proud to create a space where individuals can come together and learn teamwork, build friendships and develop their skills in their chosen sport.”

The event also included the unveiling of “Ribbon of Unity,” a giant soccer ball buoy designed by local artist Lori Angdahl as part of The Great Soccer Ball Hunt, a summer-long public art scavenger hunt celebrating the region’s soccer and maritime culture as part of the 2026 World Cup. The project features five artist-designed soccer ball buoys displayed in parks throughout Snohomish County and is made possible through the Snohomish County Arts Commission, Snohomish County Parks and Recreation and Snohomish County Public Works.
