Want to have more success in business? A new book by a local author shows you how

SEATTLE—Lessons from the Front Lines may be author Kurt Schauermann’s first full-length published book but his well-constructed and relatable perspective make this a valuable template for any new business owner or even employees seeking to reach the management or leadership level.

Based on Schauermann’s forty-plus years as a multi-unit franchise owner in the restaurant industry, the book brings insight gathered from multiple experiences where being aware of not just the things—supplies, products, equipment—are important, but the people surrounding him—their character, attitudes, their skills, their strengths and weaknesses, their personal challenges. And, equally important, their behavior and care from a customer or guest’s perspective.

Although the book is divided into three parts covering Management, Leadership, and Engagement, it doesn’t read like a textbook.  Each section has key examples of workplace situations, from mentoring promising future leaders to displaying key elements one needs to recognize and implement if the goal is longevity in business.

Promotions, raises, terminations are all a part of every business as is confronting difficult issues. Schauermann has not omitted any aspect of conducting a successful business in today’s environment. Appendices are included showing forms covering employee performance, a personnel action form, and conflict resolution details to be completed for specific incidents.

After pointing out lessons learned in each area, the reader is given space to reflect on their own situation and thoughts that come to mind; areas that might need attention.

Kurt Schauermann’s message to any business owner: “Of course, we must be profitable to stay in business, but too often we ignore our responsibility to our teams.  When people think of working at your business, do they see it as a place where they learned valuable life lessons?  Would they recommend you to their friends or, better yet, their children?”

Kurt earned his Bachelor’s business degree in 1976 from Washington State University and his MBA at the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business in 2002, but credits his dad with fostering this mindset leading to his success in business.
