MARYSVILLE — Marysville Police are investigating a fatal collision between a train and a pedestrian late Monday afternoon near 76th Street Northeast and State Avenue. The collision resulted in the death of a 45-year-old man.
Several minutes before the collision, a caller reported seeing people trespassing on the railroad tracks in the area and described one person as behaving erratically. Preliminary information indicates possible drug use may have been a contributing factor; however, the circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation.
Officers asked drivers to stay away from the area after the crash blocked the railroad crossings between 80th Street Northeast and 88th Street Northeast. By 6 p.m., the train had begun moving again and traffic started to recover.
Today’s incident marks the fourth serious train-related incident in Marysville during September and the second fatal train-and-pedestrian collision in Marysville this year. On Sept. 8, a 73-year-old man died after a passenger train struck him just north of Grove Street. Investigators have not released a cause in either case, and no identities have been made public.
The BNSF tracks run north-south through the center of Marysville, parallel to State Avenue, with more than a dozen at-grade crossings. Pedestrian fatalities on this stretch have occurred repeatedly in recent years, including several in 2021, 2022 and 2024.
Local officials have discussed grade-separation projects and quiet-zone upgrades to reduce both traffic backups and risk, but most crossings remain at street level.
