EDMONDS — South County firefighters knocked down a fire that heavily damaged an unoccupied restaurant in a Westgate commercial center early Saturday, keeping flames from spreading to neighboring businesses after a 911 caller reported smelling smoke.

The call came in around 5:45 a.m. from the Westgate neighborhood. Nothing was visible from the street, but the first-arriving crew kept searching and spotted condensation on the windows of Gyro Makers in the Westgate Village center, in the 10000 block of Edmonds Way. Inside, they found heavy smoke and active fire in the closed restaurant.
Crews controlled the main body of the fire in less than 10 minutes. Other units worked to protect adjoining spaces. Gyro Makers sustained heavy damage; an adjacent business had moderate damage. Officials credited the first crew’s situational awareness and persistence with limiting further loss.
One firefighter was checked at the scene and returned to duty. No other injuries were reported.
At least 16 units and roughly three dozen firefighters responded, including mutual-aid companies from the Shoreline Fire Department. The cause remains under investigation by South County Fire.
