OLYMPIA—Initial results from Washington state’s general election show Democrats expanding their already dominant control of the state Legislature, securing a clear two-thirds supermajority in the House of Representatives while narrowing the gap toward the same threshold in the Senate.

“Washington voters turned out in large numbers to reject the chaos and corruption coming out of the other Washington and are rewarding the policies and policy makers of this Washington,” Washington State Democratic Party Chair Shasti Conrad released in a statement. “Thank you to every voter, volunteer, and candidate who poured their hearts into making this election historic. “
Conrad attributed to her party’s dominance as a result of years of steady investment in early vote programs, year-round organizing, and candidates who stood up to what she called President Trump’s “disastrous economy and his attacks on our communities.”
With all 98 House seats and 24 of 49 Senate seats on the ballot, early tallies indicate Democrats won roughly 69 House seats to Republicans’ 29—a gain of 10 seats and well above the 66 needed for a supermajority—and is leading in the Legislative District 35 to expand their caucus in the Senate by one seat bringing Democrats just two seats away from a supermajority. Pre-election, Democrats held 30–19 majority in the Senate. Across the 24 Senate seats contested, Democrats captured 18 and Republicans 6.
The 2026 results reflect 11 flips of Republican-held seats, particularly in suburban and swing districts. House and Senate gains include:
- Legislative District 12 Position 1, where Stacy Willoughby (D) is leading against incumbent Brian Burnett (R).
- Both seats in Legislative District 14, with Chelsea Dimas (D) and Ezequiel Morfin (D) unseating incumbents Gloria Mendoza (R) and Deb Manjarrez (R).
- Both seats in Legislative District 17, where Ben Christly (D) and Diana H. Perez (D) defeated incumbents Kevin Waters (R) and David Stuebe (R).
- Both seats in Legislative District 18, with Randi L. Knott (D) and Deken Letinich (D) defeating incumbents Stephanie McClintock (R) and John Ley (R).
- Legislative District 25 Position 1, where David Berg (D) edged out incumbent Michael Keaton (R).
- Senate – Legislative District 35 where Carolina Mejia (D) is leading against Republican incumbent Michael Keaton.
Under Article XXIII of the Washington State Constitution, proposing a constitutional amendment requires a two-thirds vote in both the House and Senate. The proposed amendment is then submitted to the voters at the next general election and if approved with a simple majority by voters, amended to the Washington State Constitution.
With an estimated 69 seats, Democrats now hold a House supermajority and can advance constitutional amendments without Republican support in that chamber. The Senate remains short of the roughly 33 seats needed for a two-thirds majority, placing the party on the precipice of unilateral control over the amendment process if they net a few additional seats in 2028 (25 Senate seats up for re-election) or through special elections.
The governorship, under the control of Bob Ferguson, creates the full trifecta of Democratic political power in Washington state. Governor Ferguson can sign bills passed by the Democratic majorities without needing any Republican votes. Republicans have been reduced to 29 House seats and a diminished Senate caucus, now face limited ability to block any legislation or potential constitutional referrals in the House.
In a statement posted by Washington State Republican Party Chairman Rep. Jim Walsh on X, he wrote: “Based on the modeled profiles of ballots received but not yet counted, WAGOP expects to grind out wins in LDs 12, 14, 18, and possibly 26. The Left will not have a supermajority in Olympia.”
