Ever since the coronavirus crisis was declared a pandemic back in mid-March, the Lynnwood Food Bank has been experiencing a surge of demand for food assistance, rising at an extraordinary rate, just as the food bank is being simultaneously struck by shortages of volunteer workers.
Owners of Tia Lety Tamaleria y Taqueria, a Mexican Restaurant in Everett, Manuel Quevedo, and Leticia Vergara wanted to do something to support the food bank volunteers, going the extra mile to ensure they received lunch on Wednesday, June 10.Â
“We’re here in the good times and bad times,” said Quevedo. “We’re always here to support the community.”
Alissa Jones, Director of the Lynnwood Food Bank, says that volunteers are grateful for the lunch donation, explaining that some of them commit to 12 hour days, from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
“We’re very appreciative of our community for their support,” said Jones. “Having lunch on those long days always makes the work easier and a little more effortless because the energy is there.”
Food Bank volunteer and a Lynnwood City Councilmember Julieta Altamarino-Crosby says that the donation is admirable because the family-owned business, with only 4 employees, is experiencing the economic impact of COVID-19 themselves.
“I really admire them, the spirit they have,” explained Altamarino-Crosby. “I respect them because they’re a small business… I am impressed because these are difficult times right now.”
“Tia Lety Tamalaeria y Taqueria is always going to be here to support the community,” remarked Quevedo, responding to Altamirano-Crosby.
