Motel 6 rape suspect arrested after five-hour SWAT standoff

EVERETT, Wash. – A 32-year-old Lakewood man was arrested for first-degree rape following a five-hour standoff with deputies at Motel 6The victim, a 21-year-old woman, was transported by air to Providence Regional Medical Center for a medical evaluation.  

Around 5:50 a.m., deputies responded to reports of a sexual assault at Motel 6 off of 128th Street SW in Everett. Upon arrival, deputies contacted the victim who was able to escape the motel room and call 911. 

Deputies attempted to make contact with the suspect in the motel room, but he refused to surrender and barricaded himself inside. The Region 1 SWAT team responded to the scene and negotiated with the suspect for several hours. 

At approximately 10:40 a.m., the Motel 6 rape suspect exited the motel room and followed commands to get on his knees and place his hands behind his head.

Seconds later, the suspect stood up and began running. Members of the Region 1 SWAT team deployed less-lethal pepper balls as the suspect attempted to flee. He ran a short distance and was taken into custody without further incident.    

The 32-year-old Lakewood man was transported to the hospital for a medical clearance before being transported to the Snohomish County Jail where he will be booked for first-degree rape. 

Those convicted of first-degree rape face a maximum of life in prison and could be fined up to $50,000.
