On this day in 1945, ENIAC – Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer – was the first programmable, electronic, general-purpose digital computer built. ENIAC was formally dedicated at the University of Pennsylvania on February 15, 1946. Its design and construction were financed by the United States Army to be used to calculate artillery firing tables.
