BOTHELL—An unidentified male broke into a Bothell apartment complex Friday morning and sexually assaulted an 11-year-old child who was asleep in their bedroom.
The incident took place at the Bailey Farms Apartment Complex at 1225 183rd Street Southeast in Bothell around 2 a.m. Friday, September 6. There were no signs of forced entry, and the apartment unit was believed to be left unlocked. One of the child’s parents and at least one other child were in the apartment at the time.
When the second child awoke the suspect immediately fled the scene on foot. The parent called 911 and Detectives responded around 2:00 a.m., searching the perimeter but were unable to locate the suspect. Detectives working for the Sheriff’s Office do not know how long the suspect was inside of the apartment before fleeing at this time.
It is unknown if there were any other children in the house or if the second child was in the same room as the victim.
The suspect is still at large and detective working for the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are seeking the public’s help, who many have video surveillance at their residence between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. There is no suspect description at this time.
Detectives do not believe the suspect is known to the victim; this appears to be a random incident.
The 11-year-old victim is okay, Courtney O’Keefe, Public Information Officer for the Sheriff’s Office said, and is currently being evaluated and interviewed.
“Certainly, this is very scary for the victim and for our community. At this time, we are actively seeking help to identify the suspect and get that individual in custody,” said O’Keefe.
O’Keefe said it is unknown if there is any immediate danger to the public at this time as the incident seems to be a random attack. To her knowledge the Sheriff’s Office has not received any recent calls about suspicious behavior in, and around, the area of the incident. She said random sexual assault cases are not common in the area.
According to the registered sex offender’s database, there are a total of 38 registered sex offenders within a five-mile radius of the incident, eight of which are level three which is the highest risk. There are four registered sex offenders within a two-mile radius with one less than 1500 feet from Friday morning’s incident.
About a dozen detectives and five SIU Officers have been actively canvassing the area since early Friday morning, speaking to residents and Bailey Farms staff in order to gather more information.
Anyone with information or video surveillance is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office tip line at 425-388-3845. Anyone with immediate suspect information is asked to call 9-1-1.
