LYNNWOOD—Last Saturday, September 21, the spirit of creativity and community filled the Pacific Peace Center as Lynnwood Police, and the Family Peace Association hosted a vibrant Halloween costume-making event. Families gathered to transform donated costumes into unique creations through sewing, cutting, and gluing.
Participants brought their own sewing machines and kits, showcasing their creativity while decorating old costumes with flair.
Tiffany Krusey, a 12-year veteran of the Lynnwood Police Department and current Victim Service Coordinator, spearheaded the initiative.
“To me, this is a passion project,” Krusey shared. “My family has been doing this for years. We start in August, collecting fabrics and pieces, ensuring that every costume is made with intention and love.”
From the Lynnwood Police perspective, Crime Prevention Specialist Nic Li emphasized the importance of community engagement.
“This is about building relationships,” Li stated. “It helps families who may not afford costumes and strengthens our ties with the community.”
The event yielded an impressive collection of over 200 costumes, set to be distributed to families on October 5th at the Pacific Peace Center.
“This is our first time incorporating the making portion into the event,” Li noted. “In the past, we focused solely on donations. This year, uniformed officers will be on hand to help kids pick out their costumes.”
For Kim Miyake, Vice President of the Family Peace Association, the event also serves as a learning opportunity for children.
“We have many families here today, allowing kids to engage and bond through decorating costumes,” Miyake explained.
The costume distribution will take place on October 5th, and Kruse urged families to arrive early: “It’s first-come, first-served. Last year, all costumes were picked up within an hour!”
With excitement building for the upcoming holiday, families are encouraged to join in the fun and creativity, ensuring that this Halloween will be memorable for all. If you have your eye on a particular costume, make sure to beat the rush and arrive early!
