LYNNWOOD—The city of Lynnwood, in partnership with Veterans of Foreign Wars of America Post 1040 (VFW1040), hosted a Veteran’s Day ceremony at Veteran’s Park Tuesday, November 11, honoring, and thanking, all of those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The event was led by VFW1040 Commander, and U.S. Navy Veteran, John Beam who shared a few words before introducing City of Lynnwood Event Coordinator Ashley Murawski.

“Each year, on this day, we gather to recognize the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of the men and women who have served our country. To our veterans: your commitment has shaped our freedoms and strengthened our communities, and we are deeply grateful for that,” said Murawski.

Murawski continued that the City of Lynnwood currently has three meaningful ways the public can honor veterans, past and present, at Veteran’s Park including two commemorative bench programs, as well as a veteran’s memorial wall engraving program.

Lynnwood Mayor Christine Frizzell followed Murawski with a few words of her own, first recognizing the elected officials in the audience which included former Lynnwood City Councilwoman Tina Roberts-Martinez, State Senator Jesse Solomon, the honorable Valerie Bouffiou, Lynnwood Municipal Court Judge, incoming Mayor and current City Council member George Hurst, Lynnwood City Council members Derica Escamilla, Robert Leutwyler, David Parshall, Nick Coelho, incoming City Council member Bryce Owings, Mountlake Terrace City Councilman Dr. Steve Woodard, and others.

“To the veterans here today, who served and defended our country here and abroad, in circumstances that most of us cannot even fathom, it’s a decision you didn’t take lightly. Our country and the entire world is made better through your service and we honor your presence,” said Mayor Frizzell. “For a long time the City of Lynnwood has been known as a veteran-supported City and that will continue.”

Mayor Frizzell ended with a quote from Ronald Raegan who said, “freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.”

Next up local U.S. Navy veteran Dave McFeron, who was deployed to Vietnam in the 1960’s in mobile construction battalion 5.

Following McFeron’s story the anthems for the various branches of the United States armed services were played before Amazing Grace, the National Anthem, a firing salute, and taps.

On the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, the fighting of World War I ended in 1918. Due to the conclusion of the war, to end all wars, November 11 became a universally recognized day of celebration.
