Roblox launches age-based ‘kids’ and ‘select’ accounts to enhance child safety from predators

Roblox has faced multiple lawsuits alleging failure to protect children from online child predators, grooming, and inappropriate content. These include suits by attorneys general in states such as Kentucky and Louisiana in 2025, as well as Los Angeles County in February 2026 and others—totaling at least seven states. Numerous individual family lawsuits have been consolidated into federal multidistrict litigation in California. Critics have highlighted cases of grooming via chat and easy circumvention of existing safeguards.

Starting in early June 2026, users ages 5 to 8 will be assigned to “Roblox Kids” accounts, while those ages 9 to 15 will receive “Roblox Select” accounts. Users age 16 and older will continue with standard Roblox accounts. The new system aims to better align content access, communication features, and parental controls with users’ ages.

For Roblox Kids accounts, chat and messaging will be disabled by default, and access will be limited to games rated “Minimal” or “Mild” under Roblox’s content maturity labels. Roblox Select accounts will allow limited communication features introduced gradually with safeguards and access to games up to “Moderate” ratings.

Ages will be determined through Roblox’s global age-check technology, which uses facial age estimation via selfie, or through verification by a linked parental account. Parents can correct ages, and users automatically transition between account types as they grow older—from Kids to Select at age 9, and Select to standard at age 16.

In late 2025 and January 2026, Roblox made age verification mandatory worldwide to access chat features, restricting communication between significantly different age groups to reduce risks of interactions between adults and minors.

The multiple enhancements represent Roblox’s latest step toward what the company calls building “the gold standard” for safe, healthy digital engagement on its platform, which has more than 144 million daily active users.
