Firefighters responded just after 4 p.m. to reports of a cigarette that ignited behind a two-story townhome complex in the 4200 block of 164th St. SW.

When fire crews arrived, flames reached about 30 feet high with heavy smoke coming from the rear of one building. Crews searched the structure and confirmed all occupants had safely evacuated.

The fire spread to trees and vegetation behind the townhomes, threatening neighboring homes. Firefighters contained the flames to one building and fully extinguished the blaze in about 25 minutes.

At least two units were a total loss and four others were damaged. At least 13 people were displaced and are receiving assistance from Support 7 and Red Cross volunteers.

The cause remained under investigation by the Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office and South County Fire. Fire departments from Everett, Mukilteo and Bothell assisted.
