WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald J Trump announced Sunday that the United States and Iran have reached a memorandum of understanding to end active fighting in their months-long conflict, authorizing the immediate toll-free reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports. The official signing ceremony will take place in Switzerland on Friday, June 19.
Trump stated on his Truth Social platform that “the Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete” and added that the agreement would “bring Peace and Security to the whole Region.
“Many presidents have tried to make Peace with Iran, and all have failed before me,” President Trump posted on Truth Social. “The Leaders of the Region have, for the first time, found a President who can help them achieve real Peace. With the opening of the Strait upon the signing of the Deal on Friday, for purposes of mine removal, oil will flow on both ends again for the Region, and the World!”
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who led mediation efforts, confirmed the bilateral agreement.
“Following intensive talks, we are pleased to announce that the Peace Deal between the United States of America and Islamic Republic of Iran has been REACHED,” Sharif posted to X. “Both sides have declared the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon.”

Sharif thanked Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey for their contributions to the agreement.
“With the agreement now in place, mediators will facilitate a series of meetings this week,” Sharif wrote. “These pre-implementation discussions will lay the foundation for the technical talks and the official signing ceremony.”
An Iranian statement from the Secretariat of the Supreme National Security Council said the text of the memorandum of understanding had been finalized on the evening of June 14. It confirmed that the war and military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, would end immediately and permanently, and that the naval blockade against its country would be immediately and completely lifted.

“Negotiations for the final agreement will be postponed until after the other party fulfills its commitments according to the memorandum of understanding,” the Supreme National Security Council wrote. “The Islamic Republic of Iran appreciates the efforts of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the government of Qatar.”
The memorandum of understanding (MOU) serves as a framework agreement rather than a comprehensive final peace treaty. Key elements of the MOU include:
- Reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping immediately, with a return to pre-war shipping levels expected within approximately 30 days, and the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports.
- A 60-day period for further negotiations on outstanding issues, particularly Iran’s nuclear program.
- Iran’s reaffirmation of its commitment not to acquire nuclear weapons and adherence to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, with more detailed nuclear arrangements to be addressed in subsequent talks.
- Provisions for some sanctions relief and the phased release of frozen Iranian assets, described by U.S. officials as tied to Iranian compliance with the agreement’s terms.
Sunday’s announcement of a US-Iran deal follows coordinated U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran that began February 28, 2026, in a campaign called Operation Epic Fury.
The strikes targeted Iranian leadership sites in Tehran, including the residence of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, as well as military command centers, air defenses, ballistic missile and drone facilities, and naval assets. The opening strikes killed Khamenei and numerous senior Iranian commanders and officials. U.S. forces carried out hundreds of strikes in the first hours using fighter jets, cruise missiles and other munitions.
Operation Epic Fury built upon Operation Midnight Hammer in June 2025 that targeted Iranian nuclear facilities.
The objectives of Operation Epic Fury included preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, destroying or degrading its ballistic missile and drone capabilities, and eliminating threats from the Iranian regime and its proxies—Hezbollah and Houthis. The action followed failed nuclear negotiations in early 2026 in which the U.S. sought strict limits on uranium enrichment and the dismantling of key nuclear sites. Iran had offered some reductions but resisted full compliance with U.S. demands.
A total of 13 U.S. service members were killed in connection with Operation Epic Fury:

During Operation Epic Fury, protests against the Iranian regime took place in both Seattle and Bellevue.
On March 1, 2026, Iranian Americans and supporters gathered at the Federal Building in downtown Seattle for a “Stand with Iranian People for Regime Change” rally. Attendees celebrated the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, waved flags from the pre-revolution era and called for the collapse of the Islamic Republic. On April 4, 2026, a rally in downtown Bellevue drew several hundred people who protested the regime’s atrocities and nuclear ambitions.
Hossein Khorram, former co-chair of the American Mideast Coalition for Democracy and Finance Co-Chair of the Washington State Republican Party, told the Lynnwood Times: “President Trump beat the Islamic Republic of Iran playing three-dimensional chess which force them to surrender. President Trump used asymmetrical methods which Iran has used in the last 47 year against all Western nations, but Trump used the same method against them and was able to bring them to surrender. All credit goes to President Trump, he did a phenomenal job.
“Trump did not enter inter a forever war. He used intelligence and surprise and asymmetrical methods to paralyze the Islamic regime to surrender entirely to U.S. demands.”
International leaders praised the announcement of the US-Iran peace deal with French President Emmanuel Macron calling for “its rapid and complete implementation.”
“This agreement also paves the way for comprehensive negotiations in service of peace and security for all in the Middle East,” wrote Macron on X. “These must address concerns related to Iran’s nuclear and ballistic programs, as well as its policy of regional destabilization. This is how we will be able to build a solid and lasting peace. France is prepared to play its full part, alongside its partners.”
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the agreement as a hugely important step forward in ending the war and re-opening the Strait of Hormuz.
“I congratulate President Trump and the mediators from Pakistan, Qatar and elsewhere who have contributed to this breakthrough,” Starmer posted to X. “We have long urged de-escalation and this is the progress we had hoped to see.”
Brent crude, the global benchmark, dropped approximately 4 percent and traded around $84 per barrel, on Sunday’s peace deal announcement. West Texas Intermediate, the U.S. benchmark, fell nearly 5 percent and traded around $81 per barrel.
During the conflict, crude oil prices had risen more than 20 percent overall amid disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. The memorandum’s provisions for reopening the strait and lifting the blockade have now reduced near-term supply risks contributing to the drop in prices.
