Tens of thousands attend UFC Freedom 250 at White House

WASHINGTON — The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) staged its historic UFC Freedom 250 event on the South Lawn of the White House on Sunday evening, marking America’s 250th anniversary. The event coincided with both President Donald J Trump’s 80th birthday and Flag Day. The mixed martial arts fight, streamed exclusively on Paramount+, transformed the presidential grounds into a high-production octagon arena.

Approximately 4,300 invite-only spectators filled seats on the South Lawn, including active-duty military members, White House guests, UFC personnel and VIPs. At least 1,200 of those seats went to service members. Approximately 85,000 attendees viewed the fight across the street at the Ellipse, where a viewing party took place.

President Trump attended the UFC Freedom 250 event alongside his friend, UFC CEO Dana White.

In the featured bouts leading into the headliner, Ciryl Gane defeated Alex Pereira by second-round TKO at 1:27 to claim the interim heavyweight title. Sean O’Malley stopped Aiemann Zahabi with a second-round knockout at 4:02. Josh Hokit defeated Derrick Lewis by second-round TKO at 4:09. Mauricio Ruffy knocked out Michael Chandler in the first round at 4:29. Bo Nickal stopped Kyle Daukaus by first-round TKO at 4:34, and Diego Lopes defeated Steve Garcia by second-round knockout at 2:42.

The main event pitted undisputed lightweight champion Ilia Topuria against interim champion Justin Gaethje in a title unification bout.

A large stage structure nicknamed “The Claw” dominated the setup, while the octagon sat directly in front of the illuminated White House. The South Lawn venue featured temporary bleachers, a large video screen, extensive lighting rigs and production elements that created a concert-like atmosphere against the backdrop of the White House.

American flags lined the grounds, military personnel stood at attention, and fighter walkouts were accompanied by American patriotic themes.

The Ellipse fan zone included multiple large screens, food vendors, merchandise areas and entertainment zones.

Pre-event activities included Nitro Circus dirt-bike stunts performed near the White House grounds during the June 13 Fan Fest at the Ellipse, along with concerts, interactive fan experiences, meet-and-greets and ceremonial weigh-ins.

Sponsors included Crypto.com and Ram Trucks as presenting partners. The production carried an estimated $60 million price tag, funded primarily by the UFC and its parent company TKO Group Holdings, with no direct taxpayer cost for the core event according to organizers.

Security was extensive, involving multiple agencies, a no-drone zone and heightened measures typical of White House events.

As the first professional MMA event held on White House grounds, UFC Freedom 250 represented a significant departure from traditional uses of the South Lawn. Organizers said the goal was to create a once-in-a-generation experience that blended sports entertainment with national commemoration.

“It’s a once-in-a-generation moment,” Mark Shapiro, President and COO of TKO Group Holdings, said in a May 26 Time magazine interview. “The kind of attention, awareness, and sampling we’re going to get from audiences around the world, on that day alone, will be more than we could get in an entire year.”
