Sound Transit Sets All-Time Ridership Record of 280,000

SEATTLE—Sound Transit’s Link light rail delivered a record 280,000 riders on Friday, June 19, 2026 — shattering the previous single-day high of 220,000 set during the Seahawks Super Bowl victory parade earlier this year.

“Friday was a momentous day for Sound Transit, with the highest ridership in our agency’s history,” said CEO Dow Constantine. “We operated at peak service well into the evening on a day our region proudly hosted both a World Cup match and a highly attended Mariners game. As our region welcomed fans from around the world, we helped ensure they got to and from the games safely. I’m grateful to all our employees and partners who made this record-setting day possible.”

The surge was fueled by soccer fans traveling from across the Puget Sound region to Lumen Field for the noon kickoff of the United States Men’s National Team’s Group D match against Australia in the 2026 FIFA World Cup™. The USMNT earned a convincing 2-0 victory, advancing to the knockout rounds with one group-stage match remaining. An own goal by Australia’s Cameron Burgess in the 11th minute and a first-half header from Alex Freeman sealed the result.

Light rail ran at peak service from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m., supporting post-match celebrations while also moving a sold-out Mariners crowd to and from T-Mobile Park.

“Friday’s record ridership shows what is possible when we invest in fast, reliable transportation that connects people and communities,” said Snohomish County Executive Dave Somers. “Sound Transit helped bring our communities together and highlighted the strength of our regional transportation network. Thank you to Sound Transit staff and our regional partners.”

Multiple World Cup matchdays have already exceeded 200,000 boardings. With the possibility of a U.S. knockout-round match in Seattle on July 6, Sound Transit is preparing for continued high demand.

“Our region needs reliable transportation every day, and this global event showcased just how beneficial transit can be,” said Pierce County Executive Ryan Mello. “Thousands chose transit to attend the World Cup match or the Mariners game. These record numbers demonstrate how vital transit is to connecting our communities and creating memorable experiences.”
