The League of Women Voters of Snohomish County is inviting the public to seven free Constitution Day Community Readings across the county the week of Sept. 17-24, marking the 239th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution.
Delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the document in Philadelphia on Sept. 17, 1787. The federal observance known as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day falls on that date each year. Congress in 2004 directed schools that receive federal funds to provide Constitution-related education on or around Sept. 17. The local events also commemorate the Bill of Rights, which Congress approved in 1789, and the states later ratified.
Community members will take turns reading the Constitution and the Bill of Rights aloud. No registration is required.
“Hearing different voices — voices of your neighbors and community members — read the words of these founding documents is powerful,” League President Brenda Mann Harrison said. “Please join us for this unique experience and invite others.”
This is the second year the Snohomish County league has hosted the readings.
The League of Women Voters of Snohomish County is a nonpartisan Everett-based organization that promotes informed participation in government.
Co-hosts include the American Association of University Women, the city of Mountlake Terrace, The Daily Herald, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Edmonds School District, Edmonds United Methodist Church Political Action Group, Everett Public Library Evergreen Branch, Faith Action Network, KSER, Lynnwood Times, My Neighborhood News Group, Sno-Isle Libraries and the Snohomish County Tribune.
