To kick off Fire Prevention Week, community members of all ages are invited to “Charge into Fire Safety” at South County Fire’s Open House on Saturday, October 3, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Blue Ridge Fire Station 14, 18800 68th Ave. W, Lynnwood.
Visitors can meet their local firefighters and enjoy family-friendly activities while learning about fire safety.
Event highlights include:
- Take a tour of the fire station.
- See a fire engine up close and explore the tools firefighters use.
- Practice using a fire extinguisher to safely respond to a small fire.
- Learn how to prevent lithium-ion battery fires.
This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Charge Into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging is a Superpower.” How you charge devices like your phone can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires.
“Be sure you’re using the cord and charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer,” said Shawneri Guzman, South County Fire’s Community Outreach Manager. “You also want to charge devices only on a hard, flat surface like a table. Avoid charging on your couch or under a pillow – this can actually trap heat, creating a fire risk.”
Other habits that can reduce your fire risk are:
- Unplug your device when it is fully charged.
- Charge large items like e-bikes, scooters and power tools outside when possible.
- Stop using your device if it feels hot, smells strange or makes noises like popping or hissing.
