Seattle Strike announces Oct 11 launch and national expansion

SEATTLE โ€” Seattle Strike will officially launch Sunday, Oct. 11, and introduce USAStrike.net, the national expansion of its Seattle-based effort to defend the 2026 midterm elections through coordinated, nonviolent collective action.ย

The public event runs from 3 to 5 p.m., in person and online. Attendees will learn about the growing coalitionโ€™s plans to protect free and fair elections and ensure that votersโ€™ choices are respected.

โ€œMAGA and their billionaire backers pose a historic threat to our democracy,โ€ said Devin Hermanson, founder of Defund Musk. โ€œWeโ€™re building the collective power to shut the economy down if thatโ€™s what defending democracy requires. We hope we never have to use it. But we are preparing to act.โ€ย

Seattle Strikeโ€™s strategy combines preparation for a general strike with coordinated, peaceful mass civil disobedience. Through USAStrike.net, organizers are connecting efforts across major metropolitan areas and building relationships, communication networks and mutual aid before a crisis occurs.

โ€œWhen government and corporations are aligned in crushing our rights, only widespread economic disruption will stop them. Thatโ€™s what a general strike is about,โ€ said Paul Birkeland, a longtime Seattle-based organizer. โ€œVote to be heard, march to be seen, and strike when the other two donโ€™t work anymore.โ€ย

Participating groups include Seattle Indivisible, Troublemakers, 50501, Evergreen Resistance, Wallingford Indivisible, Queen Anne Resist, Defund Musk, Communities Rising, and Indivisible Shoreline WA. The coalition also includes union members, artists, small business owners, faith leaders and activists.

โ€œUnion power relies on collective power and member solidarity. We are all in this together and we know we have each otherโ€™s backs. An injustice to one is an injustice to all,โ€ said Laura Yurka, a shop steward with Teamsters Local 117. โ€œThere are a lot of ways union members will be able to stand in solidarity with our community if a general strike becomes necessary, even if they canโ€™t go on strike themselves.โ€ย

Attendees can learn how to contribute through outreach, communications, mutual aid, and organizing.

LAUNCH EVENT: Sunday, Oct. 11, 2026, from 3 to 5 p.m. PDT

Seattle Strike organizes in the greater Seattle area to defend democratic rights through nonviolent collective action. USAStrike.net expands that effort nationally.
