Mukilteo to host its first Diwali Celebration Nov. 5

MUKILTEO — The City of Mukilteo and Mukilteo Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Commission will host the city’s first Diwali Festival of Lights celebration on Thursday, Nov. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rosehill Community Center, 304 Lincoln Ave. in Mukilteo. The free event will invite residents to experience South Asian culture, learn about Diwali traditions and celebrate the diversity of the Mukilteo community.

The celebration will feature music, dance, cultural performances, henna, crafts and festival decorations. Henna and crafts will be available free of charge while supplies last, and food will be available for purchase.

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is a major festival celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists around the world. Known as the Festival of Lights, it is traditionally associated with the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance and hope over despair. The name refers to rows of clay lamps, called diyas, that are lit during the festival to symbolize light and spiritual renewal.

“Mukilteo is a diverse and beautiful community. It is truly one of the best places I have ever lived because of the people and the strong sense of community,” said Gauri Sanghvi, chair of the DEI Commission and event organizer. “Celebrating Diwali gives us an opportunity to share the richness of South Asian culture, learn about one another’s traditions and participate in each other’s celebrations. That appreciation and shared experience is what brings a community together.”

Whether Diwali is a cherished family tradition or a new cultural experience, all community members are invited to join the celebration, learn about the festival and share in the spirit of the Festival of Lights.

The DEI Commission promotes understanding and appreciation of diversity through education, outreach and community engagement. It also celebrates individual differences and fosters a culture of respect, inclusion and belonging.

The city’s first Diwali celebration supports this mission by bringing residents together to experience South Asian culture, learn about Diwali traditions and build meaningful connections. The event aims to strengthen community ties, encourage cross-cultural understanding and celebrate the diversity that makes Mukilteo a welcoming place for all.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information, visit the City of Mukilteo’s event announcement.
